Daily Art -- Barbara's Lookout

Barbara's Lookout
Daniel Smith watercolors
Fabriano Artistico 140lb cold press (Not) watercolor paper, 5" x 7"

This morning Kitten woke me up at eight thirty. "Want to go to Mount Petit Jean? I have an extra day off." Of course I was delighted. I wanted to sketch it in person and get reference photos using the Zoom function the way I forgot to use it last time. Plein air sketches, photo reference and the earlier version of this painting befoer Kitten critiqued it are below the LJ cut.

Previous version of Barbara's Lookout before Kitten critiqued it. She suggested adding more midtones and texture to the foreground trees, putting in the hedgerows dividing the patchwork fields in the distance and defining the house better with its shadows. She couldn't recognize the house's structure.

Once I looked at this photo again enlarged, I could see where I went wrong on the house and got some idea what the hedgerows were doing, though I had to push them closer to the cliff to make it work.

Photo reference with Zoom used to get more detail on the house. So glad I got this!

This is a preliminary version in watercolor. Next one will be a small oil pastels and I might do some other studies before I tackle the final painting for Barbara -- hers will either be 9" x 12" if I use Colourfix or 12" x 16" watercolor paper with a margin marked off for matting it, sketched, underpainted in flat colors like a cartoon and then painted in oil pastels.

That one might not be a one-day production. I think I'm much closer to it now though! The next one will test out how the textures and colors look in oil pastels. I got lots done today!

very cool
I personally love the sketch with the Grays - I'm just a black/white art person :P I can't wait to see the finished product!

Re: very cool
Thank you! I'm going to have fun with the oil pastels ones. Need to do a small one first before I scale up to the big one.
