Writer's Block: Clock Punching

What was your first job?
A bad memory. One of the dumbest things I ever did in my life. I wound up on my feet at Dunkin Donuts. I wrecked my back there and constantly had to go to chiropractors to get straightened out. I think the chiropracty cost my grandparents more than I earned but my grandparents paid for it because they wanted me working and wanted to pretend I was healthy and normal.

Even though it was part time it was incredibly stupid. I should've left for California, sold art and done freelance writing. I might never have wrecked myself up that bad if I'd done that instead of sticking around -- and at 18 no matter how fried out I was and how much emotional blackmail was going on, it was my own decision. I regret that. I wish someone had told me how easy writing was compared to fast food -- and that I could pick my topics and slant. Back then I'd have had no trouble writing for an alternative paper if I'd understood they paid!
