Some sketches and stuff

Creepy Old Man Eyes
9B graphite on paper, about 4" wxde, from life. Drawn for a workshop on NING where we started by doing Drew Barrymore's eyes. Teacher Michelle said she wanted to see the background on my blue glass coffee cup sketch, so I redid it by adding in everything that was around it on the table.

Another 10 Minutes
4" x 6" Derwent Tinted Charcoal Pencils on paper, from life.

Everglades
3 1/2" square
9B graphite on paper, from photo reference by lisilk on WetCanvas.com for Sept. 25 2009 Weekend Drawing Event. Had to do a value study for a Swamp Painting. May tackle this in watercolor or acrylics next.

Two ATCs from the same set of 16 references by lisilk:

Red Fingered Rubble Crab
2 1/2" x 3 1/2" watercolor and Graphitint shavings on watercolor paper.

Three Sisters Beach, San Salvador
2 1/2" x 3 1/2" watercolor on watercolor paper.

Both of these are on hot press Lanaquarelle 140lb watercolor paper that got a coffee stain during the move down from Kansas. In the beach scene the stain was larger and I used it for the beach underpainting, just continued it with a little Burnt Umber and then started detailing over it. On the crab, I was able to make it vanish by matching it all around the crab and speckling with Graphitint shavings. So as I work my way down through that damaged block I may even get to pages that don't have coffee stains on them, that would be awesome!

The weather is still bright and clear, it's been doing me a lot of good compared to the previous three weeks of misery. It's starting to feel like fall is supposed to -- like I can function better than summer.

That's funny but a coffee stain on the paper wouldn't bother me. In fact, I would treasure as part of the composition, but not try to make anything more of it than what it was. I don't paint realism, but I cherish it when I encounter it.

Thanks. It's my personal thing -- the stain wasn't in a good place to build a composition on it, though I considered doing one of them by finishing the painting in glazed layers of more coffee. Still might do that sometime with one of them.
