Oak Tree Bole

Oak Tree Bole
9" x 6"
Art Spectrum pastels on light blue Canson mi-Tientes paper, smooth side.

From the second oak tree demo posted by Scottyarthur on WetCanvas.com in the Soft Pastel Talk forum, thread is "Starting my Tree Studys, feel free to join in." It's turned into a workshop and when it got lively again, Scott started doing demos for the tree studies regulars. I'm getting a lot out of it!

This time I tried to stay true to the exact shape and direction of the branches, proportions, treating it as a portrait of a specific tree instead of just "an oak in general." I got looser with the background on purpose. I'm warming up to do a good Southern landscape with a live oak that's in the Pastel Strokes challenge for January. I hope to get the live oak true to the reference though I may fool around with other elements.

I love how you've used so many different colours in this to make it look so real.

Thank you! This is working out some of the problems I had with Cat/Wombat in Garden. I've got that out again and have been studying it. I think that to go much further I need to switch to different pastels though. Part of the problem may have been using student pastels in sophisticated techniques they weren't made for.

Thank you! That was my main goal with it, get that afternoon light coming through the branches intermittently.
