Please Help! Moving to San Francisco!

I'm moving to San Francisco on August 1st. I'd planned to save up $2,000 for the move but my savings only reached about $500 before I got the news that I'm losing my current housing. I am multiply disabled with skeletal problems, fibromyalgia, asthma, arthritis and scoliosis, living month to month on SSI.

My daughter Kitten, her husband Karl and my two grandkids are moving into their dream house with 20 acres on August 1st. I can't live on my own in Arkansas. The climate leaves me too sick to do anything ten or twelve months a year and my basic needs are not met. I don't have a power chair and can't even get all five prescriptions I need to function at my best.

I used to be a street artist when I lived in New Orleans, until I got too sick to do it. That was the best job I ever had - during the winter when I had five or six months I could function well and the tourists were flowing. MediCal will get me that power chair even if I can never be self supporting again. San Francisco Arts Commission licenses street artists with a better program than the New Orleans one. Tourism is year round there.

So is my health - the San Francisco micro climate is exactly like a Midwestern autumn. I walked farther, went out more, did more physical activity when I lived there than anywhere else I've ever lived. If I can ever become self employed again, it'll be in San Francisco. I need to give that a good honest try - then if I can't do it full time enough to live on, build other income streams till all of them let me become self supporting.

So please help, give me a hand up. I'll pay it forward. Once I'm settled in, I'll be a street artist again - and the first thing I'll do is go find some homeless or unemployed people who want to become street artists and teach them the trade. If I can't work enough days to support myself and it takes longer to become self employed again, I'll still do that. Those that can't do can teach.

If you live in San Francisco or the Bay Area and can help in other ways, please comment or send me a private message. I want to go home and I want to pay taxes again, that's my goal. Thank you!

I wish I could offer you something more than good wishes, but my car insurance payment is going to eat my next unemployment check whole as soon as it gets here.

Good luck with the move!

You can help! If you took a few minutes to repost this link to Facebook and Twitter, any other social media you're on - then even if you can't afford to help, someone among your acquaintances might be moved by the story and pitch in.

People who help me try to spread this link around are doing as much as people who can donate themselves. I am so grateful. Please do help pass along the link! I know when I wasn't in a crisis I'd put in a $5 or a $10 on something if I happened to see it on my feed.

I too am on SSI and not sure just when, but will be moving to Canada to be with my husband. I know that it's hard to save money to move when you have so many other needs that include medicine. I can't do much but I did share this on Facebook. Wish I could do more than that and pray, but I know both help, even if only a little.

I wish you the best of luck and hope you are able to move soon. Be safe and be blessed

Wow, thank you! You understand. It's also very hard to save money when you're on SSI at all because of the total cost of living. I think it's an achievement to manage it.

People earning four times what I have every month have trouble saving money. It can be done by someone under the poverty line but it takes extreme sacrifices that I've been taking for granted for a long time. I was uninsured until I got on SSI.

I didn't think anything of it. I rated "worry about future problems" at a lower priority than "current necessities." I lived on earnings smaller than my SSI is now and I survived, actually since rent was cheaper I lived on pretty much the same budget. I spent a little more in scheduled bills.

But I lived without air conditioning in the summer in New Orleans and that's some of what slaughtered me, because I didn't think heat could kill you the way cold could in the North. Now I know better. Heat/AC is in a category with "rent" and "power" and "Internet."

Once I get there, I'd better get out my easel. I have most of my necessities covered but my new home is just a sliver over what I get on SSI. Food is food stamps. When I have food stamps I don't spend a dime on food unless I have a treat eating out on my budgeted "Spending Money." It doesn't cover pet food, toilet paper, soap - but I'm pretty well stocked. Internet is going to be the biggie - Internet is what'll keep the online branches of my self employment branches alive and let me work every day even before I can leave the house.

My goal with donations is to have the savings I would have had if I'd stayed long enough to get $2,000. I'm getting closer - I'm past the critical point of necessity now. I also have other posts with three eBay auctions for "Sale of the Keepers." If you can reshare those too, please do! They're good art and someone may like it, these are artworks I never intended to sell because they're the best I did at the time and I love them.
