Writer's Block: Found Objects

As the old saying goes, one person's trash is another person's treasure. What's the best thing—chairs, roller skates, old electronics—you've ever found that someone else had thrown away?

It wasn't trash, though I often picked up and used abandoned furniture and once had a giant oak executive desk that was abandoned in an apartment I rented. I managed to drag it to two more apartments before I had to leave it. But the best free cool mathom I ever had was a hand me down, not a found thing.

My artist friend John Houle, several of whose paintings I've collected, got a set of 60 artist grade Rembrandt soft pastels from an oil painter friend who tried them and hated the medium. John tried them too and hated the medium. He stored the box and passed it on to me. I know how to do pastels and have enjoyed them ever since. They are still in perfect condition and the vintage box seems to go back to about the year I was born. I seriously wonder how many other painters it went through before it stopped in the hands of a pastelist!
