Writer's Block: Spoilers Below the Cut

Have you ever ruined the ending or given away plot developments in a book, movie, or tv show by telling someone who hasn't seen or read it what happens? Has anyone ever done this to you?

It's been a long time since I gave anyone a spoiler. It connected for me when I was living with someone who constantly needed to narrate every movie he'd ever seen, in more depth and detail if I did not want to watch the movie because it wasn't my genre or I hated the theme. It annoyed me too much and then I realized how annoying I got when I would talk about my own book and give away the ending.

So I quit doing it. Now my daughter is very careful to ask "Do you want spoilers?" before launching into any spoiler. Sometimes I do, if I don't plan on seeing the movie or reading the book or if it wouldn't make any difference to my enjoyment. There are some that I'd rather know how it turns out in advance to judge whether I even want to see it -- or in more general terms than a spoiler, whether it's got a nihilistic theme.
