Writer's Block: In a Jam

If you were in trouble or ran afoul of the law, which fictional detective or investigator—from tv, movies, or books—would you want to help you?

That is pretty tough. I think it would probably be Clarice Starling out of Silence of the Lambs. She had a good handle on a lot of things and the common sense to tell whether someone's just weird or actually dangerous. She also had the guts to stand up to authority when she was in the right.

Also, unlike a great many fictional detectives, she doesn't get this sadistic glee out of revealing every other character's personal secrets illegal or not at large to watch the havoc pile up among them. Some of the mysteries I've read ought to turn into bloodbaths as the number of homicide-inducing conflicts revealed in passing on the way to Catching The Bad Guy wound up exploding.

Come to think of it, that would be a rather amusing satire of the genre.

Plus, Jodie Foster is awesome.

Sort of tangential, but you get that.

You're right, she is. I really enjoyed the movie. I was thinking of the books version as much but yes, Jodie Foster is awesome. She managed to convey the character so well. That took impressive skill beyond just beauty.
