Writer's Block: There Can Be Only One

Do you believe in monogamy?

Monogamy isn't a belief, it's a custom that some people practice and others don't. I respect any form of marriage any culture has as their own choice. For myself, I am open to any reasonable terms within a relationship and will be faithful to the terms as defined. I have been in open relationships and polyamory and it's more complex, so I think of monogamy as easier -- but not necessarily the only way to live.

Do I believe every human being should be monogamous? Good grief no. Some people aren't cut out to be married by any definition and others would have an easier life if they agreed to an open relationship in the first place. I have always resented the way the USA defines marriage in a narrow way that does not allow for cultural variation, that other people's marital customs are treated as a crime and so second wives of polygynous cultures lose some legal rights, and maybe even more important, their children do.
