Reservations! Guess Who's In The Plane!

His Moste Royal Hairiness, Ari Cat! He will be flying in the plane with me in a small carrier tucked under the seat in front of me, so we're facing each other. Believe it or not, this is $50 cheaper than putting him into the forward cargo compartment.

I have to get there at Ouch in the Morning to get that fare, but it probably won't be as crowded. I have one stopover for an hour but they're providing wheelchair and attendant at every stage. Best of all, the combined price for his fare and mine is $99 less than I'd budgeted for our air fares.

So now I don't feel so bad making that long term decision about the iPhone. I just shaved half of it from the total budget by getting a cheaper air fare. It's not even standby, it's an actual reservation. It's good for a year if I have to change it, but has to be changed prior to departure. I get a window seat. No standby. No worrying about whether I'll actually be on that flight - I've done standby before.

Whew! Big big load off my mind. Best of all, Ari will be on the plane in my sight throughout the trip. We won't be separated for one minute. I'm allowed one Personal Article, which would be my laptop bag, and one Carry On, which would be my cat. So my pastels need to be shipped and I'll do without them for a few days.

Having my fuzz buddy with me = Priceless.

The donations link for my relocation is http://robertsloan2.livejournal.com/585925.html and the $99 saved will help with the things I planned to trim back - getting the boxes out. Turns out that CeCe doesn't mind having boxes shipped to her early, so I may be able to clear out some space in my room that way. At least the most important ones.

I was warned by every pastelist I know not to put pastels into checked luggage, no matter how well packed. So those are going by UPS. CeCe, who's picking me up, has a large vehicle and said she could drive my packages to SF with me. I'll try not to send more than she can carry. But even shipping a few of them out early will help substantially.

His vet checkup has to be within 10 days of the flight. Kitten probably knew that, I'm sure that's why she hasn't gotten around to taking him in. Just measured his carrier - I need to buy one of the soft sided airline ones for him, it's too large. But he only weighs 15 pounds so he'll fit under the seat comfortably.

I hope they're not too expensive and that there's a place I can order one online.

Yep. There's a place I ordered it online. It was a bit pricy at $77 - but I saved $50 on Ari's fare by having him in the cabin with me under the seat in front of me where both of us will be much, much happier.

So basically flying me and Ari is within budget pretty much as planned. $23 off is still better than $500 even. He's playing and scrambling around on the floor now being a Rowdy Cat, having fun. He knows we're moving. But I think he'll like being able to talk to me during the trip, a whole lot.

Glad I ordered this early in the month - plenty of time for it to arrive and let Ari get used to it. Kitten has some Puppy Pads left from training her Corgi, Rhiannon, so I can bring Puppy Pads and change them at our Dallas stopover. He'll be in the carrier about five hours.

He's been in a carrier for 14 hours of road trip and he's so comfortable with travel - as long as we're together. I think he will calm down as soon as we're past security and he's back in the carrier in my lap and carried onto the plane. This is going to rock.

I need to be sure to keep the load in my laptop bag light though, since it needs to have my laptop, Kindle, netbook etc. in it. Plus whatever lightweight art supplies comfortably fit. I'm thinking a watercolor journal.

I hope Ari doesn't get ear pain from the air pressure. I assume that they wouldn't let you take him on if he would? I've no idea how it works for cats.

If he does, I'll be there to comfort him. That's a whole lot better than his being in the cargo compartment. I will, but I'll live. He has flown before and I heard that he behaved well just as he does on road trips. He's the world's best traveling cat.

Once he's in the carrier for a move, if he sees suitcases, he calms down and relaxes. He moved so often in his eleven years of life that travel doesn't faze him. Vets do, but he's getting a brand new carrier that's not the one he usually goes to the vet in. I'll leave it open for him to relax in while we get ready so that he knows we're moving.

As if the boxes being packed didn't cue him. I also told him about it in English. I think he understands a lot just from the tone. He had one unhappy move when I forgot to put his towel in the carrier because I was too sick, but moving to Arkansas or Kansas, he settled down happily and went back to Traveling Cat mode.

Thank you! He is. All his life he's been so gorgeous. He was a photogenic kitten who's grown into a magnificent cat. I know he'll charm everyone at the airport!

Robert, you're stopping in Dallas? Wouldn't it be great if I could see you for a few minutes? Nice to have a moment of face-to-face. However, that would involve you exiting the secured area and going through security to re-board. Might not work out. Let me know if you want to give it a try.

Re: Dallas!!!!
That could be cool, but I think it'll be real early in the morning. I'm leaving Little Rock at 6:25am. Then an hour and 15 minutes to Dallas with an hour layover. If you want to try, we need to work out the time zones - but it might be horribly inconvenient. Also fair warning. I may be in very bad shape from pressure sickness even with taking extra pills.
